Celebrate Cycling Week 2011

Kingston's Celebrate Cycling Week June 5th-11th

Why not take this opportunity to start your active and healthy lifestyle by choosing cycling to school, work, or running errands? Reward yourself on your commute by stopping in at one of the free 'Roll In Breakfasts", or join Kingston Velo Club (don't be shy, they really are a friendy bunch!), on a leisurely tour around a part of the city.

The schedule of events is as follows:

Sunday June 5th:

  • Cycling Week Kicks Off Downtown: A City of Kingston Proclamation declaring June 5th to 11th Cycling Week will be read during the awards ceremony of the Beat Beethoven Run. The run will be paced by cyclists. The awards will take place 12:00pm, Confederation Park.

Monday June 6th: 

  • Roll In Breakfast for cyclists, 7:30 - 9:30am Queen's University, corner of University and Union Ave. Mechanics from Gears and Grinds will be on hand to do bike courtesy inspections and minor tune ups.
  • An easy evening ride with Kingston Velo Club, 5:45pm-7:15pm, departing from City Park at Bagot St. For more details about the ride, click here.

Tuesday June 7th:

  • The joys of bicycle touring will be illustrated at this public presentation at St Lawrence College. 7:00pm, Room 12030

Wednesday June 8th:

  • Roll In Breakfast for cyclists, 7:30-9:30am,  corner of Princess and Clergy St.  (co-hosted by Kingston Velo Club). Mechanics from The Cyclepath will be on hand to do courtesy inspections and minor tune ups. 
  • Mid week 30km ride with Kingston Velo Club, 6:00pm, departing from Cataraqui Community Centre, 1030 Sunnyside Rd. Fo more details about the ride, click here.

Thursday June 9th:

  • Screening of "American Flyers" 6:30pm, at the Isabel Turner Library, 935 Gardiners Rd   

Friday June 10th:

  • Roll In Breakfast for cyclists 7:30-9:30am at Market Square, downtown Kingston. Mechanics from Frontenac Cycle and Sport will be on hand to do courtesy inspections and minor tune ups.

Saturday, June 11th:

  • Cycling Week closing ceremonies (Time and location TBA)

 

 

 

KCAT Symposium

March 29th,2011

KCAT (Kingston Coalitin for Active Transportation) will be holding a symposium on cycling issues. Guest speakers include Eleanor McMahon, founder of Share The Road Cycling Coalition, and Hans Moor, president of Citizens for Safe Cycling Ottawa. The symposium isbeing offered in two sessions. Session One is from 1:30-4:00 pm at Queen's School of Kinesiology & Health Studies 28 Division St, Clergy Room 101; Session Two is from 7:00-9:00 pm at Memorial Hall, City Hall. This is a free event.

Rack & Roll is Rockin' Again!

Kingston Transit's Rack and Roll program begins March 21st. Sportsworks bike racks are installed on all buses, allowing cyclists to integrate public transit into their transportation routine. Using Rack and Roll is a great way to start you on your way to daily bicycle commuting. The racks are easy to use, so don't be afraid. Our focus is on making cycling education available to as many people as possible by using different methods (such as courses, class presentations, media advertising, etc.) so that people will become empowered to learn to ride safely and more inclined to make the choice to cycle.
